Interactions of TCP and Radio Link ARQ Protocol

چکیده
Two distinct error and flow control schemes may be simultaneously involved in wireless Internet networks. One is an end-to-end transport protocol TCP which provides reliable packet delivery with flow and congestion control, and the other is a radio link ARQ protocol which provides radio link layer frame error recovery. In this paper, we investigate interactions between these two separate error control mechanisms by simulating TCP Reno over IS-707, a radio link ARQ protocol standard for spread spectrum digital cellular systems. We show the effects of TCP sliding window size to the overall system performance under a variety of radio link scenarios, and present the benificial effects of longer persistence in radio link frame error recovery for best-effort bulk data applications.

Investigating Interactions between ARQ Mechanisms and TCP over Wireless Links
In this paper we investigate interactions between TCP and wireless ARQ mechanisms. The aim is to understand what is the best configuration of the wireless link protocol in order to guarantee TCP performance, seemingly a controversial issue. Interactions between TCP and different link layer mechanisms are evaluated by means of an analytic model, that reproduces a generic selective repeat ARQ pro...
متن کاملModeling interactions between link layer and transport layer in wireless networks
Wireless access to Internet requires that information integrity is preserved while transmitting data over the radio channel. ARQ schemes and TCP are often used as error-control techniques at the link layer and at the transport layer, respectively. In this paper, we study the interactions between an ARQ protocol and TCP when a data traffic connection includes both wired and wireless links. By us...

The UMTS 3G system (3 rd generation cellular system) is designed to offer a packet switched mode for data transfers in parallel to a circuit switched mode. This feature was planned since the beginning of 3G studies, contrary to 2G ones (such as the GSM system). To provide reliable data transfers, protocols implementing ARQ (Automatic Repeat reQuest) techniques are needed. In UMTS, up to three A...
متن کاملOn the effects of ARQ mechanisms on TCP performance in wireless environments
In this paper we investigate the interaction between TCP and wireless ARQ mechanisms. The aim is to understand what is the best reliability degree of the wireless link in order to guarantee TCP performance. For this purpose, we first develop a Markov model for a selective repeat ARQ protocol, widely used in the current wireless environments. Secondly, we design a crosslayer algorithm that, by e...
متن کاملOn the performance of additive increase multiplicative decrease (AIMD) protocols in hybrid space-terrestrial networks
It is well known that TCP does not perform well in networks with large propagation delay and high link loss probability, which are typical in hybrid space-terrestrial networks. Implementing Automatic-Repeat-Request (ARQ) retransmission over satellite links in hybrid networks has been proposed to enhance TCP performance by hiding the link losses from TCP. This paper analyzes the impact of implem...
